Grade 10 11 12
On May 4, 2023, I participated in “GAILA XR Asia Cup Challenge 2023,” which is hosted by the International School of Tianjin. I was elected as a senior school representative to visit the event after the interview. With a growing interest in VR technology, this became a wonderful opportunity to explore the potential uses of this evolving technology beyond the boundaries of gaming.
During this challenge, 50 students from different international schools across Asia created groups of 5 to explore VR and AR technology. My team and I were able to create a video about climate change using XR technology as well as perform data visualization and graphs in 3D format utilizing the VR headsets. By collaborating with peers from different schools and backgrounds, I was able to build my communication skills and create lasting friendships.
This was an unforgettable experience as I witnessed how other schools are implementing VR technology in education. Furthermore, it pushed me to explore diverse perspectives and collaborate with others to create a video using the new technology.
Based on this experience, I launched my school’s first VR LAB using the new knowledge I had gained in China. First, I researched VR in education and how to implement VR in areas such as science, P.E., and other subjects that require virtual environments. Then, I pitched the improvements the implementation of VR services could provide in the classroom. This pitch included examples like iXR Labs and Class VR to encourage school executives to secure funding for VR headsets.
Consequently, we were able to secure the funds for the VR headsets and I launched the student-directed information session to educate my community on this new technology. Each session gave brief presentations of what VR is and its powerful potential in education. I instructed the students on how to use the VR headsets and encouraged them to explore various academic areas with these headsets. In addition, I also consistently worked with school faculty and teachers to aid their transition in implementing VR into the school environments.
By participating in this role, I took on a leading role in sharing my knowledge of VR to improve education in my community. Recognizing the potential of VR in education through research and dedication, I transformed my idea into my school’s reality. This was done not only through my interest in VR but also through the help and communication of school executives.
